This is the well at Aberdour Castle.

There is something deep rooted that compels people to chuck coins into wells. It’s not something I do myself – I can think of other uses for my spare change.

It’s origins lie in pre Christian rituals. Springs and wells were sacred.  So those coins are offerings or sacrifices to older gods.

Which is topical as Halloween approaches. After all, those turnips and pumpkins are just socially acceptable alternatives to severed heads.
