Looking at an old picture. This could be a beach in Scotland. A couple of scallop shells, a cockle and a turret shell. It’s not though – it is in Tasmania.

I went there in 2006 and was struck by how some things seemed familiar but that much was quite different.  Like looking in a warped mirror.

The trees looked pretty similar but close up were very different. At the back of this beach, in the dunes, were big aboriginal shell middens.

And the mammals – well that is like another world. Tasmania is the best place to see marsupials now – and many of them, in the absence of predators, are very tame.  It’s the place to see wombats, wallabies, kangaroos, quolls, pademelons…

Also a great place for a scallop pie.
